Two Queens in the Queen City

Ace and Lance in Charlotte

It seems only fitting that our first face-to-face meeting should occur in the Queen City — Charlotte, N.C., in case you had to ask, about four hours up the highway from Atlanta.  Ace had a layover in Charlotte on his way to Miami, where he was scheduled to be the keynote speaker for Pride Week at Florida International University.  This was at the invitation of one of his many fans, Bridgette Wynn, who is a Pride Week organizer for the LGBT branch of the school’s Multicultural Programs and Services office.

Bridgette and her friends Gio Correale and Dori Glaser joined us on the podcast tonight and we had a lot of fun talking about important matters of the day, such as the 24-inch hot dogs available at the Las Vegas airport, our favorite panty colors (pink) and fabrics (lace) — and also about how difficult it can be to predict the sex of a newborn strictly on the basis of DNA.  (Ace and I are certain that our sex chromosomes must be XXX.)

Only Ace and I could record more than 100 episodes of a podcast without getting any closer to each other in real-time than the distance from Charlotte to Atlanta (about 250 miles) — and this almost by accident.  Our meeting wasn’t anticlimactic, but I couldn’t help noticing that our conversation went the alternately meandering and deep way it always seems to.  We still find things to talk about that are new between us — such as how education “used to be”, and what it was like for Ace to have had a near-miss as one of America’s most promising evangelical preachers.  (Nowadays, as you would know from listening to the show, Ace has eschewed Christianity for a belief in aliens or somesuch.)

When it came time for Ace to submit to the National Superstition Scan (a.k.a. the TSA checkpoint) and go back into the gate area, I stood on the other side of the barrier as the queue snaked this way and that, bringing him back over to where I stood every couple of minutes or so.  We chatted at each of these intervals, until finally he was well in the thick of it and on his way back into the secure area of the terminal.  As I turned to leave, I noticed him chatting away with the people on either side of him in the queue.  I don’t think he’s ever met a stranger.
