ace, i have to take a bit of exception for you to lump all those religions together under the blanket statement of blind obedience, at least on behalf of buddhism. in one of the most famous teachings of the buddha, the kalama sutta, the buddha instructs his followers:
“Do not believe in anything (simply)
because you have heard it.
Do not believe in traditions because they
have been handed down for many generations.
Do not believe in anything because it is
spoken and rumoured by many.
Do not believe in anything (simply) because
it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority
of your teachers and elders.
But after observation and analysis
when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is conductive to the good and benefit of one and all
then accept it and live up to it.”
so, he says “don’t blindly believe or follow anything without testing it yourself first.” BUT, he was confident that the truths he discovered and expounded would pass this rigorous testing, and, for over two thousand years (so far), it has.
Thank you, Dr. Bombay … you have taken the Aristotilian admonition to heart and have passed some very wonderful information on to us. I have often felt from a personal standpoint that I could easily be a Zen follower.
